Technologies

Analog and digital technologies are available in all hearing aid styles. Hearing aid features vary among styles and technologies.

Classic analog hearing aids typically have manual volume controls for you to adjust loudness. These hearing aids provide better speech clarity in quiet than in noisy situations.

There are a wide range of features among digital hearing aids. Digital hearing aids are programmed by your audiologist using a computer. Many digital hearing aids have multiple programs for various listening situations, such as in noise or groups and for telephone, television, and music. Some digital hearing aids have dual microphones to reduce background noise and improve speech clarity in noisy situations. Some digital hearing aids change automatically among programs to achieve the best speech reception in a quiet versus noisy situations. Most digital aids are available with automatic volume adjustment. Digital hearing aids can be reprogrammed to accommodate changes in hearing.

There are three categories of assistive listening devices:

  1. Personal communicators are used for one-to-one conversations, listening to radio, music, or television.

  2. Telephone amplifiers improve speech reception and volume on the telephone.

  3. Alerting/signaling devices are used to alert the listener to telephones, alarm clocks, smoke detectors, doorbells, etc.
